Home Agains
ALL WAS DARK AND QUIET AS PERSEPHONE sneaked in the front door of her home. Tiptoeing, she groped her way down the hall. But as she passed her momâs door, she stubbed her toe on a loose mosaic tile. âOw!â she cried out. Dropping her bag, she hopped about in pain.
âPersephone?â In a flash Demeter was out of bed and at her daughterâs side. Under a circle of lamplight, her golden hair shone and stuck out at odd angles. Sheâd thrown on her rosebud-patterned bathrobe in such a hurry that it was inside out. âWhat happened? Are you okay?â she asked worriedly.
âIâm fine.â Persephoneâs heart beat wildly as she waited for her mom to ask why she was out of bed in the middle of the night.
âWhatâs the matter? Couldnât you sleep?â asked Demeter. Then her gaze fell on Persephoneâs bag. Her forehead wrinkled. âWhatâs that doing here?â
âIâumââ Persephone stopped, unwilling to lie, but unwilling to tell the truth, either.
Demeterâs hand flew to her throat. âYou were planning to run away, werenât you?â
Persephone rubbed her stubbed toe, looking away. âNot planning to. Already did. But Hades made me come back home.â
âI thought I smelled smoke!â wailed Demeter. âThat horrible godboy! This was his idea, right? I canât believe you ran away to the Underworld! Iââ
âStop!â Persephone exclaimed. âYouâre not listening! It was my idea to run away, not Hadesâ.â
Demeter turned as pale as a shade. âBut why?â
âBecause I was mad.â Persephone let out a long sigh. âCan we sit down? Iâm really tired. And my toe hurts.â
âYes, of course,â her mom said. âLetâs go to the kitchen. Iâll get you a snack. And some cold water to soak your foot.â In the kitchen, Demeter set some breadstyx and a bowl of nectar on the table.
âThanks.â Persephone sank onto a chair. Her mother set a bowl of cold water on the floor, and Persephone lowered her foot into it. Then she picked up one of the styx and dipped it into the nectar. When she was younger, her mom had often fixed this snack for herâespecially whenever sheâd woken from a nightmare in the middle of the night.
Demeter sat down across from her. âSo tell me. Why did you run away?â she asked again. There was a pained look on her face. âAm I such a terrible mother?â
âNo,â said Persephone. âOf course not. I told you. I was just mad.â
âI know you think Iâm a chariot mom,â Demeter said softly, âbut I have more experience of the world than you. I know what can happen. Itâs my duty to protect you, even when you donât think you need protection.â
âBut Iâm almost thirteen years old!â Persephone protested. âI can look after myself!â
âYou think you can,â Demeter said sharply. âBut sometimes you donât use the best judgment.â
Persephone bristled. She knew what her mom was thinking. âYouâre wrong about Hades!â she exclaimed. âSo are my friends! Like I told you, he made me come home. In fact, he brought me back here. He knew youâd be upset if you found out Iâd run away.
